Graveyard Keeper 2 Church and Sermons — Full Guide

How do you unlock the church in Graveyard Keeper 2?

The church unlocks through Jack’s boat quest chain. Finish Herbert’s Certificate, Please and Grave Expectations first, then gather 5 Wooden Plank and 5 Bronze Detail for Jack; the twins row the boat out, Jack leaves port, and after one night’s sleep his letter sends you to the Village Tavern to meet the Nun.

The chain in order:

  • Herbert’s two openers. Certificate, Please needs only the Burial Certificate from your first burial, and Grave Expectations asks for graveyard score 10. Both sit on the Herbert quest line.
  • Materials for Jack. 5 Wooden Plank requires Woodworking I; 5 Bronze Detail requires Bronze Works, and you must place a Hardening Bucket next to the anvil to extend it.
  • The twins. Help Herm and the twins Jeffrey and Heffrey, and they agree to row the boat (Jack in a Boat). Jack’s boat then leaves the port.
  • The Nun arrives. Sleep once, read Jack’s letter, and meet the Nun at the Village Tavern. Jack never comes back — he sends her back to the village instead.
  • Holy Moly! and Church Cleaning. Talking to the Nun starts Holy Moly! and unlocks the Church Cleaning technology.
  • Church quality 10. Clear the broken pots and blockages, then build Interior Bench I seating. Each bench costs 2 Wooden Plank + 6 Bronze Nails, and there are 6 seating slots, so bring 12 planks and 36 bronze nails.
  • Report back correctly. Walk into the church once after placing the benches, before you tell the Nun it is done. Skipping that step leaves the objective open.
  • First sermon. Use the lectern to preach. Holy Moly! completes, Nun reputation rises by 10, and Wrath is added to the weekly calendar as the sixth day.

One detail is less certain. The GK2 Fandom page reports four blockages inside the church, each needing one item of a specific material, but that is a single source that could not be fully checked, so treat the exact count as unverified.

How often can you hold a sermon?

The limit is the calendar, not a cooldown bar. Sermons run once per week and only on Wrath, the sixth day of the six-day week, marked by the red circled-arrow glyph. Miss that day and you wait a full week for the next one.

The sermon happens at the church lectern and needs a matching Prayer already written. Prayers come in 27 tiers across I, II and III, and 16 of them grant a timed blessing when the sermon succeeds. Writing and prayer technologies sit under Theology — see the tech tree overview for the surrounding nodes.

How is sermon attendance calculated?

Attendance equals the lower of your Likes and your church quality. Zero Gratitude or zero church quality means an empty building, so upgrading only one of the two never raises the ceiling. Every sermon also consumes Likes rather than church quality, and each parishioner costs one Like.

That is why Gratitude and church quality have to grow together: a beautiful church with no town popularity still preaches to nobody. Likes come from town orders taken on Pride day, from selling goods that carry the Likes tag to merchants, and from Town Gratitude scrolls worth 5 each. Houses also produce Green Scrolls, which Linda collects each Lust day and converts into Town quality, raising the Likes cap. The sourcing list is in Gratitude explained.

Two caps decide how many people can show up at all. Gratitude starts capped at 10 and rises to 20 after you win the first town battle, Break Through to the Port, as covered in the town restoration guide.

What do you get from a sermon?

A sermon pays Faith and money from three inputs: how many people attended, the prayer’s own rates, and your graveyard score. Base Faith and base money are calculated first, and on success you add a per-person Faith bonus, a money bonus per graveyard point, and the prayer’s blessing.

Payout line Formula Paid on a failed sermon?
Base Faith attendance × the prayer’s Faith per person, rounded down Yes in wikily.gg’s table; Prima Games says no
Base money attendance × the prayer’s bronze per person Yes in wikily.gg’s table; Prima Games says no
Success bonus Faith attendance × the prayer’s bonus Faith per person No
Success bonus money graveyard score × the prayer’s bonus bronze per point No
Timed blessing prayer-specific buff (16 of the 27 prayer tiers) No

Success rate is attendance divided by the prayer’s difficulty, capped at 100 percent, and each prayer has a minimum attendance below which the sermon cannot start at all.

The official worked example uses Basic Prayer I with 20 attendees and graveyard score 30. Difficulty 8 makes 20/8 a guaranteed success. Base Faith is 20 × 0.25 = 5, the success bonus adds 20 × 0.3 = 6, for 11 Faith total. Money is 20 × 5 = 100 bronze base plus 30 × 10 = 300 bronze bonus, so 400 bronze, or 4 silver. Basic Prayer I itself lists a minimum of 4 people, difficulty 8, 0.25 Faith and 5 bronze per person.

The two sources conflict on failure. wikily.gg’s payout table pays base Faith and base money whether or not the sermon succeeds, losing only the success bonuses and the blessing. Prima Games states that money and Faith are awarded only on a successful sermon. Both readings are listed here rather than merged.

Does corpse quality affect sermon rewards?

Corpse quality does not enter the sermon formula directly. The graveyard term in the payout is graveyard score, which combines gravestones, fences and decoration with the white skulls on each buried corpse. A corpse’s red skulls feed zombie perks instead; they never multiply your sermon money.

Claims that better corpses raise sermon payouts did not turn up a reliable source. What does suppress payouts is the Excessive zombies penalty: when your zombie count passes the Zombie limit, most prayers lose part of their reward. Two wikily pages disagree on how many prayer tiers that penalty covers, so only the effect itself is safe to state. See corruption and red skulls for the skull side.

What raises church quality and attendance?

Church quality sets one half of the attendance ceiling, so church furniture and zombie musicians are the main upgrades. Perks raise the per-person rates instead: Priest lifts Faith per person, Cardinal lifts bronze per person, and Performer raises both success bonuses.

Modifier Effect on Basic Prayer I
Priest perk 0.25 → 0.35 Faith per person
Cardinal perk 5 → 6 bronze per person
Performer perk bonus bronze 10 → 12 per graveyard point, bonus Faith 0.3 → 0.4 per person
Choir zombie +1 church quality each; Novice Musician +2, Skilled +4, Maestro +7
Organ +5 church quality

Church furniture is researched under Theology, where the Church Furniture, Lighting, Smells, Carpets, Music and Illumination lines unlock the individual pieces. Media guides recommend investing in the church as soon as you get it, because Faith is the hard currency behind Inspirations and fast travel — the spending side is in Faith and Inspirations.

Which prayer should you write first?

Basic Prayer I is the standard early pick: minimum 4 people, difficulty 8, 0.25 Faith and 5 bronze per person. Faith Prayer I trades money for Faith at 0.35 Faith per person but only 5 bronze, while Money Prayer I drops to 0.2 Faith per person and pays 10 bronze.

Blessing prayers are the reason to expand the list. Combat Prayer, Harvest Prayer, Prayer for Repose, Prayer for Excellence and Hypno Prayer each grant a timed buff on success — bonus damage, faster growth, better corpses, +1 to all five masteries, or clearing the Excessive zombies penalty. Tiers I, II and III last 45 minutes, 1 hour 30 minutes, and 1 hour 39 minutes 59 seconds. Prayer for Old God sits at the far end: difficulty 180, 180 Faith and 150 bronze per person, with no blessing.

Budget the same weekly pool for travel as well. Activating far-off fast-travel Milestones costs Faith, and Prima Games puts an early basic sermon at roughly 3 Faith, which covers only one or two nearby stones.
