Graveyard Keeper 2 Energy and Insanity — Why You Are Tired
Why Graveyard Keeper 2 makes you tired, how insanity lowers your maximum energy, and the exact energy and insanity values of every consumable.
What does “tired” mean in Graveyard Keeper 2?
It means Lack of sleep, and it has nothing to do with your energy bar hitting zero. Roughly two consecutive in-game days without sleeping triggers it, and the sign is a blue Zz bubble that appears on screen with a sound cue. Sleeping resets the counter, energy levels do not.
That distinction is the single most misunderstood part of the system. Players drain the energy bar to nothing, assume that is why they feel awful, and then eat instead of sleeping. The tired state keeps running regardless.
What happens to you while you are tired?
Two penalties apply at once. Every point of energy you spend adds 0.5 insanity on top of the normal cost, and every item that reduces insanity works at half strength. So the state both accelerates the problem and blunts the cure, which is why ignoring it for a full session compounds badly.
The community description matches: being tired amplifies both stamina drain and insanity accumulation. The practical rule is to finish the thing you are in the middle of, then sleep, rather than pushing through a second or third work block.
How does insanity cap your maximum energy?
Directly and permanently. Your maximum energy equals 100 minus your current insanity, and insanity itself caps at 80 — so at the worst possible point your maximum energy is 20, no matter how much food you carry. The Iron Will perk lowers the insanity cap to 70, guaranteeing at least 30 maximum energy.
This is the mechanism behind the most common complaint about the game. A player with 70 insanity sees a 30-point bar, eats an Elder’s meal worth 120 energy, and watches most of it evaporate. The meal filled the current value; it cannot raise the ceiling.
Where does insanity come from?
Digging graves, burying bodies, exhuming corpses and autopsy work all add insanity, with every autopsy operation contributing. Graveyard maintenance adds it too — carving gravestones and fences, and general work in the graveyard. On top of those, doing anything at all while tired adds insanity through the energy-spend penalty.
Because the sources are the core loop of the game, you cannot avoid insanity entirely. You can only offset it with sleep and consumables faster than you accumulate it.
How do you lower insanity?
Sleep is the free method, but it works under a specific condition. Sleeping until your energy is full while the tired state is active ends Lack of sleep and removes 20 insanity. Sleeping when you are not tired does not lower insanity at all, so a nap on a normal day is wasted as a cure.
Everything else comes from consumables, and they are the only way to remove large amounts quickly. Note that during Lack of sleep every value in the table below is halved, so the best time to drink a Krotowuha is after you have slept, not before.
| Item | Insanity change | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping to full energy while tired | −20 | Ends Lack of sleep; does nothing when not tired |
| Krotowuha | −50 | Largest single reduction available |
| Wine (gold) | −35 | Brewery stock, higher trader levels |
| Wine (silver) | −30 | |
| Wine (bronze) | −25 | |
| Chocolate | −20 | Also restores 50 energy |
| Beer | −12 | Energy value unconfirmed |
| Blueberry Cider | −10 | |
| Mead | −10 | |
| Apple Cider | −7 | |
| Berry Pie | −3 | Also restores 30 energy |
The community’s standing strategy is the cheap end of that list. Gather berries whenever you pass a bush, push Farming mastery, then batch Berry Pie at the Kitchen — six berries and four dough make four pies, each worth 30 energy and 3 insanity. That turns routine foraging into continuous sanity upkeep instead of a crisis response.
Which foods restore the most energy?
Elder’s meal leads at 120 energy, ahead of Energy Potion III at 100, with Fisherman’s pie and Burger tied at 80. Five dishes in this game pay out more than their tooltip claims, because a meal grants energy once per colour of tech point it lists. The gap between the printed and actual value is not small.
| Item | Energy restored | Panel value | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elder’s meal | +120 | 30 | Kitchen Oven |
| Energy Potion III | +100 | — | Strongest potion |
| Fisherman’s pie | +80 | 20 | Kitchen Oven |
| Burger | +80 | — | Kitchen Table |
| Fried golden carp | +60 | 30 | Panel understates it |
| Heavenly salmon | +60 | 30 | Also pays 50 red tech points on use |
| Kraken steak | +60 | 30 | Panel understates it |
| Grape Juice (gold) | +60 | — | Vine Press |
| Grape Juice (silver) | +55 | — | Vine Press |
| Chocolate | +50 | — | Also −20 insanity |
| Energy Potion II | +50 | — | |
| Cheese | +50 | — | |
| Grape Juice (bronze) | +50 | — | Vine Press |
| Berry Pie | +30 | — | Also −3 insanity |
The Sauna pre-order building stacks on top of all of it. Its Steamed Up buff raises food energy by 10%, so a Burger goes from 80 to 88 and an Elder’s meal from 120 to 132. The bonus is calculated on the base energy of the dish and applies for the duration of the buff, which makes it worth timing around a long crafting session rather than a short one.
Why does eating not fix a low energy cap?
Because two different numbers are in play. Eating restores current energy and is capped by your maximum; insanity lowers the maximum itself. Food is a refill, not a repair, and no meal in the game reduces insanity enough to matter compared with simply sleeping off the tired state.
So the correct order is always the same. Sleep to clear Lack of sleep and take the free 20 insanity reduction, then eat to refill the bar at its restored size. Doing it the other way round wastes most of the meal.
How should you manage energy day to day?
Solve food production before anything else. Running wheat through flour and dough into bread at the Kitchen Oven means you stop buying food, and the same kitchen makes Berry Pie from foraged berries. That single chain handles both energy and sanity and it does not depend on trader stock.
Then respect the two rules that actually bite. Do not keep working while the Zz bubble is up, because every action is costing you extra insanity, and do not start a high-consumption job on a low bar. An autopsy run, a long research session or a batch of advanced crafting will drain a full bar; topping up afterwards is cheaper than interrupting halfway. If you are still establishing the loop, the beginner first week guide covers when to fit farming in, and the common mistakes guide lists the energy traps that catch most new players.
For the other half of the system, insanity interacts with the church and sermons loop through Faith and blessings, while the potions and elixirs that help most are covered in the alchemy recipes. Sauna access and its pre-order caveats are explained in the sauna guide.
