The Writing Desk costs 4 Wooden Plank, 6 Bronze Nails and 1 Polished Bronze, and the Writing Basic technology unlocks it. It sits on the Book writing mastery branch from level 1 to 16, burns no Fuel, and can be worked by a zombie.

Two of the three materials come off the early wood chain, and the third is the one that trips people up. Polished Bronze needs 2 Bronze Detail, 2 Sand and 1 Melted Fat, and it is made at Woodworking Workbench I rather than at an anvil. Read the chain in the direction you actually play it. Skin comes off an autopsy or butchering job, four Skin-equivalents become four Leather Scroll, each Leather Scroll becomes six Clean Paper, and only then do you have paper to spend on prayers. Ash comes from the Crematorium and Melted Fat from the Distillation Cube, so the whole chain reaches back into the Morgue and the alchemy station lines. Paper Press is the shortcut worth building: it turns 1 Paper glop into 20 Clean Paper, far more than the Writing Desk’s own 6-per-scroll recipe.

Unlocking a new prayer is not the same as being able to supply it. The mid and top tiers both swap three Clean Paper for one notebook, and both notebooks cost Leather Scroll plus Clean Paper to make, so every step up the prayer ladder doubles the paper you need.
