How to Make Dream Dust in Graveyard Keeper 2 — 23 Ways
Dream Dust needs exactly 1 green and 1 blue rune. All 23 ingredient combinations, what must be researched first, and the three recipes that consume it.
How do you make Dream Dust in Graveyard Keeper 2?
Dream Dust is brewed at Laboratory I from exactly one green rune plus one blue rune, with no red at all. The shipped data records 23 valid ingredient combinations. The formula is not available from the start: it stays hidden until the tech node Alchemy, Basic is unlocked, and that node’s only parent is a Plague Doctor reputation gate.
The unlock costs nothing: both nodes are priced at zero red, zero green and zero blue, so the barrier is reputation, not resources.
| Step | What it unlocks | Cost |
|---|---|---|
Plague Doctor reputation node (lock_npc_plague_doctor_10) |
Character reputation gate only | 0 red / 0 green / 0 blue |
Alchemy, Basic (alchemy_start) |
Dream Dust formula, Flask shelf, Laboratory I | 0 red / 0 green / 0 blue |
Source: gamebalance_full.json → techDefs[].alchemyFormulasAfterUnlock and techDefs[].buildingsAfterUnlock, build 25509347. The formula itself carries hiddenAtStart = 1, and the quest table lists two hidden Plague Doctor entries named Sweet Dreams on the chain that runs through this powder.
Once unlocked, the bench still needs a stocked Flask shelf and fuel. All 29 formulas are registered against Laboratory I; a tier named Laboratory III appears in the localization file but carries no formula here.
What runes does Dream Dust need?
Exactly zero red, one green and one blue, and nothing else in the tank. Across the 29 formulas in build 25509347, Dream Dust is the only one with that colour triple, and its two-rune total sits on the floor of the formula list.
Six formulas cost two runes in total. Dream Dust is the only one of those six that draws one rune of each colour instead of stacking a single colour twice.
| Formula | Red | Green | Blue | Valid mixes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dream Dust | 0 | 1 | 1 | 23 |
| Paint | 0 | 2 | 0 | 21 |
| Lacquer | 0 | 0 | 2 | 14 |
| Damage Potion | 1 | 1 | 0 | 23 |
| Healing Potion | 2 | 0 | 0 | 13 |
| Zombie Motivator Potion | 1 | 0 | 1 | 17 |

Because the red requirement is zero, no red-rune ingredient can legally enter a Dream Dust brew at all — not as a substitute, not as a top-up. Per-item rune values across all 70 mixable items are tabulated in red green blue rune values.
Every one of the 23 Dream Dust mixes uses one or two ingredients, so the formula never touches the three-slot bench. Across the full list, 6,274 of the 6,960 recorded mixes do fill all three slots, and six formulas — Alkali, Berserker Potion III, Tannin Liquid, Philosopher Stone, Umami, Reanimation Liquid — have no two-ingredient mix at all.
What is the cheapest ingredient combination?
Three single ingredients already carry the whole recipe: Ash, Peat and the green-and-blue Alchemic Powder each give one green and one blue on their own, with no second item. Everything else is a pair, and the 20 recorded pairs form a complete grid of five one-green ingredients times four one-blue ingredients.
| Ingredient | Red | Green | Blue | Base price (bronze) | Works alone |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ash | 0 | 1 | 1 | 10 | Yes |
| Alchemic Powder (green + blue) | 0 | 1 | 1 | 10 | Yes |
| Peat | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | Yes |
| Berry | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Needs a blue partner |
| Leaf | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Needs a blue partner |
| Stick | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Needs a blue partner |
| Water | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Needs a blue partner |
| Alchemic Powder (green) | 0 | 1 | 0 | 5 | Needs a blue partner |
| Blueberry | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | Needs a green partner |
| Blood | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | Needs a green partner |
| Seed oil | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | Needs a green partner |
| Alchemic Powder (blue) | 0 | 0 | 1 | 5 | Needs a green partner |

Every cell below is a recorded mix, which is why the number lands on 23:
| Blue ingredient ↓ / green ingredient → | Berry | Leaf | Stick | Water | Alchemic Powder (green) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blueberry | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Blood | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Seed oil | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Alchemic Powder (blue) | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
Source: gamebalance_full.json → alchemyMixSourceDefs[] where formulaId == "powder_dreams", build 25509347. Twenty pairs plus the three single brews make 23.
Four of the twelve appear on a town trader’s restock list. The Apothecary lists Ash and all three Alchemic Powders at 20 units per restock, with nothing in its notSelling list, at every tier. Which trader takes Dream Dust back is on the vendor buy price matrix.
A base price of zero means no trade value, not free to obtain — Berry, Leaf, Water, Blueberry, Blood, Seed oil and Peat sit at zero and still have to come from somewhere. Dream Dust stacks to 20.
Do you have to research every ingredient first?
Yes. Every ingredient must be studied once at the Study Table before its runes become visible to the laboratory, and an unstudied item simply will not appear as a usable slot. The rune values themselves never change — they are fixed on the item — so research only decides what you can see, not what the item is worth.
This is the mechanic that moved between the two games, so if you are returning from the first one, the do I need to play GK1 before GK2 comparison is worth five minutes. Twelve ingredients is a small study bill, and every study is permanent.
The bill is smaller than twelve. Only 19 item types in the dataset are researched before you take control, and three are Dream Dust ingredients: Alchemic Powder (green), Alchemic Powder (blue) and Alchemic Powder (green + blue) all start studied. The other nine — Ash, Peat, Berry, Leaf, Stick, Water, Blueberry, Blood and Seed oil — each cost one Study Table run and consume the sample.
Why does the alchemy bench refuse my ingredients?
Because the bench matches colour totals exactly. Dream Dust wants one green and one blue and nothing else, so a single surplus rune in any colour fails the brew and the bench returns nothing. Load order is irrelevant, but a third ingredient overshoots immediately — the recipe only ever fits the two slots of Laboratory I.
The bench also needs a stocked Flask shelf and fuel before it will start at all. Every other formula, including the six that need Laboratory II, is in the alchemy recipe list; the 6,960 recorded mixes behind those totals are in alchemy ingredient combinations.
What is Dream Dust used for?
Three recipes consume it, each asking for exactly one Dream Dust. Two run at the Formulation Bench on the Anatomy mastery branch and one runs at the Kitchen Table. The fertilizer side of that chain, and the per-plot application rule, is in the fertilizer guide and the growth elixir overview.
| Recipe | Other inputs | Station | Guaranteed output | Ticks | Mastery |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crop Boosting Fertilizer I | Peat x2 | Formulation Bench | 1, plus 1 per Compost Chemist worker level | 3 | 2 |
| Fancy Incense | Melted Fat x1, Fragrance x1 | Formulation Bench | 1 | 8 | 5 |
| Summon Fairy | Comet’s Tail x1, Tooth x1 | Kitchen Table / Kitchen Table II | none recorded | 3 | 3 |
Source: crafts.csv → need_items / duration / talent_lock, build 25509347. Both bench recipes carry a second, chance-based roll for one extra item at 0.5 × Alchemist worker level (fertilizer) and 0.4 × Alchemist (incense) — a perk bonus on top of the guaranteed output, not a second guaranteed unit.
Summon Fairy is the odd one out: the only Dream Dust sink outside the Alchemy chain, at the Kitchen Table rather than the Formulation Bench, and it produces no item in the recipe data. Farm it against Comet’s Tail and Tooth.
Can you sell Dream Dust, and what do traders pay?
The Alchemist is the only buyer in the shipped data, and Dream Dust sits on that trader’s list at all three tiers — five units per restock at tier one, ten at tiers two and three, with a price modifier of zero on every record. Its base price is 100 bronze. The final payout is computed at runtime.
Source: gamebalance_full.json → vendorDefs[].tierDataList[].vendorProducts[] and itemDefs[].basePrice, build 25509347. The shipped data contains no selling-price formula, so no figure beyond the base price is quoted here; the general pricing rules are in item prices and selling.
What does studying Dream Dust at the Study Table give you?
Fifty blue tech points, once. The Dream Dust study is a one-time Study Table entry that takes one Dream Dust and five Science drawn from the table, takes six ticks reduced by two per Researcher level, and then opens a result window for that powder.
| Study requirement or reward | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| Dream Dust | 1 |
| Science drawn from the Study Table | 5 |
| Duration | 6 − 2 × Researcher level |
| Energy per tick | 2 − Researcher level |
| Insanity per tick | — |
| Tech points | 50 blue, 0 red, 0 green |
| Chance output | Story item at 0.3 × Scientist level |
| Repeatable | No, one-time craft |
Source: gamebalance_full.json → surveyDefs[] entry surv:powder_dreams, build 25509347. No published source records what the result window itself displays.
Twenty-eight of the 29 formulas have a matching study; Explosive Dust is the only one without. Dream Dust’s is the single alchemy study paying blue points with no red and no green attached, and its 50 blue ties for the largest blue-only reward an alchemy study offers. Where those points go is in science research yields; banking the Science is in tech points farming.
