Do You Need to Play Graveyard Keeper 1 Before 2?

Do I need to play Graveyard Keeper 1 before Graveyard Keeper 2?

No. The sequel tells a self-contained story, the opening quests teach every system from zero, and nothing in the critical path assumes knowledge of the first game. New players start clean; returning players start with homework — unlearning names the sequel changed.

That said, the first game teaches the genre habits this one rewards: batching work by day, banking resources before weekly gates, and reading tooltips before wikis. If you own it and like the loop, play it for fun, not for preparation.

What carries over in story and characters?

Almost nothing mechanical, and the cast overlaps only partly. The developers confirm you will meet some old friends and learn what happened to others, but they name only one absence explicitly.

Question Answer
Shared protagonist story? No — the sequel’s questline (110 quests, 254 steps) stands alone through the Final Battle and the Greed fragment
Gerry the talking skull? Explicitly not returning — the sequel’s skull is Larry, named by the developers to head off the question
Snake, Ms. Charm? No reliable source confirms either appearing
Same NPC roster? Partly — Herbert, Jack, Gunter, Albert, Linda and the Nun carry the six ending reputation lines at 90 each
Same setting logic? Expanded — the Town is now a real walkable area, which is why NPCs stay at fixed locations instead of visiting weekly

The full gate order and the six reputation lines are in the main quest order guide.

What did Graveyard Keeper 2 rename or rebuild?

This table is the real answer for returning players. Nearly every workbench was renamed, two station families are entirely new, and several first-game recipes describe items that work differently now.

First game Second game What changed
Carpentry workbench Woodworking Workbench I and II Split and renamed; Polished Bronze is a woodworking recipe, not an anvil one
Stone cutter / stonemason’s bench Stonemason’s Workbench Renamed; same role
Blacksmith’s anvil Wooden Anvil → Iron Anvil → Steel Anvil Three-tier ladder with extensions (Hardening Bucket)
Alchemy bench Alchemy Workbench plus Formulation Bench Split: brews in the lab, assembly at the bench
Church workbench Writing Desk Renamed and relocated to the Writing Basement
Quality fertilizer + boost (roman numerals) Headstart / Crop Boosting / Farming Fertilizer tiers Renamed and re-stationed; old names describe the previous game
Steel chisel (single item) Steel Anvil’s 47-recipe set No single chisel — pick the tool matching your bench
8 research tabs (approx.) 5 branches + free Cooking tab Book Writing and Spiritualism folded into Theology; Cooking costs no points
Weekly NPC visits Fixed locations + day-gated mechanics NPCs stay put; battles, orders, sermons and resurrection each lock to one weekday
Gerry Larry Different skull, developer-confirmed

The station catalogue with all 85 records is in the crafting station list, and the five-branch research costs are in the tech tree overview.

Which first-game habits will hurt you here?

Three. First, following old station names into the build menu — “stone cutter” does not exist, and the correct bench is one search away. Second, copying old recipes: anything naming the Church workbench, peat plus a named enhancer, or a steel chisel belongs to the previous game. Third, waiting for NPCs to visit — they will not, because the mechanic moved to day gates on the six-day wheel.

Start instead with the route that assumes zero knowledge: the beginner first week guide sequences burial, food, church and first zombie, and the common mistakes guide lists the traps that catch veterans and newcomers alike.
