What are runes in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Runes are the red, green and blue values carried by alchemy ingredients. A formula demands an exact colour total — one rune over or under and the lab produces nothing — and only the totals matter, never the order ingredients are loaded. A single colour caps at 5 runes per mix, so the strongest formulas need three ingredients rather than two.

The most-used ingredients are single-colour filler, worth memorising before anything else.

Ingredient Red Green Blue Formulas it appears in
Clay 1 0 0 21
Flesh 1 0 0 21
Sand 1 0 0 21
Berry 0 1 0 18
Leaf 0 1 0 18
Stick 0 1 0 18
Blueberry 0 0 1 14
Blood 0 0 1 14
Seed oil 0 0 1 14
Flax 1 1 0 13
Flour 0 2 0 13
Zombie goo 0 0 2 10

Two more groups matter. The 19 Alchemic Powders carry exactly the runes printed in their name — “Alchemic Powder (1 red, 2 blue)” is one red plus two blue — and the Apothecary buys them. Organs mix too, but only gold-quality Heart, Brain and Guts carry runes, so item quality tiers change what a body part contributes. The full 28-formula list is in the alchemy recipes guide.

Why does the lab refuse ingredients you already own?

Every ingredient must be researched once at the Study Table before its runes become visible. Research costs Science — 1 to 50 per item — and consumes the item, plus 6 to 32 energy per study, dropping to 2 to 14 with the Researcher perk. One study per item type is permanent, so stocking Science early beats hunting an ingredient later.

Where do you get Clay in Graveyard Keeper 2?

From the Clay Digger Stand at the Riverside: assign a zombie and it gathers Clay with no inputs and no supervision. The stand is unlocked by Zombie Digging (50 red + 10 blue, Metallurgy, hidden), and it costs 2 Wooden Plank plus 4 Iron Nails to build.

Clay is one of the busiest raw materials in the game with 28 consuming recipes, which is why the zombie post pays off fast.

Use Recipe Station
Brick 2 Clay + 1 Coal → 2 Brick Smithy I
Brick (bulk) 4 Clay + Fuel Kiln
Tableware 2 Clay + 1 Coal Smithy I
Clay Molds 2 Clay + 1 Coal Smithy II (feeds Iron Kit II and Engineering Kit)
Clay Plate 2 Clay → 3 Clay Plate Potter’s Wheel
Clay Urn 4 Clay → Clay Urn Potter’s Wheel
Ceramic Plate 3 Clay Plate + 10 Fuel → 3 Ceramic Plate Kiln
Furnace I build 12 Brick in the construction cost Yard auto-crafter

Clay Plate and Clay Urn are intermediates rather than finished goods: plates feed Melted Fat at the Distillation Cube, and urns feed Alcohol, Fragrance and the Columbarium urns at the Formulation Bench.

What about Sand?

Sand is Clay’s twin: same single-red-rune role in alchemy (21 formulas), same zombie-post supply, wider industrial use at 30 consuming recipes. Build the post even if alchemy is your only goal, because nothing else in the early game substitutes for it and the glass recipes downstream gate the whole laboratory bench.

Use Recipe Station
Glass 3 Sand + 1 Coal (or 3 Sand + 10 Fuel) Smithy I / Furnace I
Glass Containers 2 Sand + 1 Coal Smithy I
Lens 3 Sand + 2 Coal (or 8 Sand + 30 Fuel) Smithy II / Furnace I
Polished Stone 4 Piece of stone + 1 Melted Fat + 2 Sand Stonemason’s Workbench
Polished Marble 4 Marble Plate + 1 Melted Fat + 2 Sand Stonemason’s Workbench
Tin + Golden nugget 3 Sand → 2–3 Tin + 1 Golden nugget Sluice Box
Polished Bronze 2 Bronze Detail + 2 Sand + 1 Melted Fat Woodworking Workbench I

The Sand Digger Stand mirrors the Clay post: Riverside location, 2 Wooden Plank plus 4 Iron Nails, same Zombie Digging unlock. Build both posts together — the crafting station list shows them side by side in the zombie workstation family, and the zombie production line covers staffing order.

How do you work out a rune mix without a spreadsheet?

Start from the number the formula asks for, then subtract what your two best ingredients already supply. The cap is 5 per colour and a mix holds at most three ingredients, so a formula demanding 4 red and 2 green is a two-slot problem only if one ingredient carries 4 red alone.

Formula target Two-ingredient route Why it works
2 green Berry + Leaf, or Leaf + Stick Both are single-green, so 1 + 1 lands exactly
2 blue Blueberry + Blood, or Blood + Seed oil Same single-blue pairing as the green row
1 red Clay + Flesh, or any two of Clay, Flesh, Sand Three single-red fillers means six ordered pairs
1 red + 1 green Clay + Berry, or Sand + Leaf Two different colours, so no ordering constraint
2 green + 1 red Flour (0/2/0) + Clay Flour is the only 2-green single ingredient listed

The last row is the pattern to look for: when a formula needs two of one colour, check whether a single ingredient already carries both, because that frees a slot. Zombie goo at 2 blue does the same job for the blue formulas, and Flax at 1 red + 1 green covers any mixed target on its own. The alchemy ingredient combinations page works through the full enumeration per formula, and the red green blue rune values page carries the per-item numbers with their sources.
